Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a comfortable orthodontic treatment used to move teeth into proper placement. Invisalign features clear, removable plastic trays instead of the metal and wires of braces. While traditional braces make cleaning your teeth challenging, Invisalign helps people maintain good oral hygiene since the aligners are removed to brush your teeth and eat.

What dental issues can Invisalign treat?

Invisalign can treat many of the same dental issues as traditional metal braces, including:

  • Crowding
  • Crooked teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Overbite
  • Open bites
  • Underbite

Invisalign is also a good option if your teeth are straight but have too much space between them. The plastic aligners move teeth closer together to eliminate the gaps.

What is the Invisalign treatment process?

Invisalign is available for teenagers and adults. The dental team at Menlo Park Family Dental evaluates whether Invisalign treatments are right for you during the initial consultation.

If the team determines you’re a candidate for Invisalign, 3-D images of your teeth are created with the iTero® digital scanning system to customize your treatment plan. The team determines how long your Invisalign treatment will last and shows you images of what your teeth will look like when treatment has completed.

Your customized plan is sent to a laboratory for the creation of your first set of clear aligners. You wear Invisalign aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat and clean your teeth. The aligners gently move your teeth into position, and you may get new aligners every week and visit the office for checkups about every six weeks.

How long do I have to wear Invisalign?

Each set of aligners is worn for about a week before moving to the next, although mature adults may require longer periods between aligner changes. You can shorten your overall treatment time required to achieve your new smile by wearing your aligners consistently.

How do I clean and maintain my Invisalign aligners?

Maintaining your Invisalign aligners is easy because they are removed for cleaning and eating. Once out of your mouth, you can brush the aligners twice daily with your regular toothpaste and a toothbrush. You can also purchase and use Invisalign cleaning systems.

Don’t give up on your dream of having a Hollywood smile just because you don’t want to wear traditional metal braces. Invisalign offers an invisible and comfortable treatment to improve your smile. Call Menlo Park Family Dental, or schedule your appointment online today.
